Hammonds On Stage at BBC Music Day
This Friday (5th June) sees the BBC undertake their Music Day for 2015. The event is taking place in various venues across Great Britain from locations as diverse as Hadrian's Wall and Belfast's Crumlin Road Goal. In West Yorkshire Centenary Square in Bradford is the centre piece of the day and the band have been lucky enough to receive an invite. There will be events running throughout the day in Bradford, starting at 12:30 with the Joint Intermediate Wind Bands. Later more than 732 school children from 51 schools across Bradford will come together for the first time to perform Anna Meredith's Ten Pieces composition 'Connect It', a mass body percussion piece in the central mirror pool (pictured above).
BBC Radio 3 will feature a special broadcast of 'In Tune' live from the Kala Sangam Arts Centre during their usual slot from 16:30-18:30. As part of the broadcast a small group from the band will be performing four pieces (Barnard Castle March, All Through the Night, Elegy from ‘A Downland Suite’, and La Réjouissance) live on the show. The BBC Philharmonic will also be part of this broadcast with members of the South Asian Arts organisation. Throughout the afternoon BBC Radio Leeds very own Johnny Ianson will be broadcasting his highlights of the event from 15:00.
Moving into the early evening the full band will share the stage with the brass band of Bradford Music Service to perform one of the 10 pieces (Mars from the Planets Suite) which form the centre piece of this day. By this point in the proceedings we will have moved from BBC Radio 3 to BBC Look North, who will be broadcasting the local news from Centenary Square on Friday evening. Along with Mars we will also be performing three other pieces including Pastime With Good Company as a joint item with the youth band.
