Hammonds Win Yorkshire Area
After a very enjoyable three weeks working on the test piece, Carnival Romain, the band were delighted to be crowned First Section Yorkshire Champions at the 2011 Yorkshire Area.
The day began with a very early final rehearsal (at 07:00 on a Sunday morning) in Bradford. We had just finished running through a few final bits of the piece when the draw arrived; we were to be the first band on! We made our way to St. George’s Hall and had finished our performance by around 09:30.
From that point on there was nothing more we could do but await the verdict of the adjudicators. From the field of 9 bands we were announced as the winners by the adjudicators David Horsfield and Barry Thompson. We will now go on to represent Yorkshire in the First Section National Finals in September which will be held at The Centaur in Cheltenham on the 24th and 25th September 2011.
The opening of Carnival Romain features a challenging euphonium solo and to crown an amazing day for the band our solo euphonium player, Matt Allsop, was awarded the prize of best soloist for his stunning playing of a very difficult part.
